and leader mcconnell, senator feinstein, john mccain. our thanks and appreciation to mrs. bush and madame secretary for taking time to be here today and the contributions to this effort and your commitment to advancing the cause of freedom and democracy in burma. i would be remiss if i did not mention someone who's not with us today, congressman tom lantos. tom, and his wife and staff, worked so hard on behalf of burma for so many years. i wish he were here to share this moment in history with us because i think today is an amazing day. today is an incredible. who would have thought that when this bill was introduced in the house in 2008 when aung san suu kyi was under house arrest that in a few short years she would be standing or sitting with us on u.s. soil receiving this honor as a member of the burmese parliament. back then we thought about granting the metal and extension which may have been the first time a person would have received in the history of the metal the congressional gold medal while in detention. who would have imagined this change was possible. who would have thought

margin in 1996, john kerry, john mccain @ -- none of them was in negative territory. all of them few them more favorably than unfavorably. this was something we have not seen before. part of that reflects the greater polarization of american politics right now. it used to be the case that a lot of voters from the other side would still like the other guy. even in 2008, a lot of democrats like john mccain, thought he was an ok guy. now i think we're in a time of greater partisanship and some respect so that his ratings were much lower on long obama supporters and democrats in general than is typical for that kind of cross party opposition. the bigger issue was among independent voters, among the middle of the electorate. you would suggest an unappealing candidate. it was not just that they were not excited about him, they actively did not like him. most of the time when people have to cook a coin, they will say using ok. that was a big problem for him. some people would say it took him longer to tackle the issue over the summer than was ideal. that may have been a reflection of the obama c

's members with them. host: john mccain writes a big budget deal is still worth doing. he points out to the history of some of these agreements, most notably with ronald reagan in the 1980's and president bush in 1991 in which republicans agreed to spending cuts that never happened while raising taxes. guest: that's right. there's a little confusion about how much spending cuts happened. it's the same sort of formula both sides are pursuing this time. you lock in the tax increases on the front end. then you come back later, six months, nine months, 12 months and find spending cuts in defense programs and set them into law. if you're among republicans is if you reach an agreement now and agree to tax increases, the spending cuts will get undone or never will be followed through on. that's one of the things that has held back talks, because republicans are skeptical that democrats will follow through. host: charles is on the independent line from colorado. caller: good morning, steve. i listened to it the myopic dogma in this segment over and over. the only people i can blame on this a

was an effective method of obtaining information. senator's john mccain, dianne feinstein and carl levin are asking the head of sony pictures to correct the record. we believe you have an obligation to state the role of torture in the hunt for osama bin laden is not based on the facts, but rather part of the film's fictional narrative. let's turn to the director of the aclu national security project. thank you so much for coming on the show. >> thank you for having me. >> the opening scene depicts the torture of a detainee. later the detainee supplies a piece of information during a meal with his interrogators. do you think the film misleads people on the hunt for bin laden, does it not provide sufficient context? >> i think the film certainly starts out with the claim that it's based on fact and it leaves the strong but entirely false impression that torture led to bin laden. and we know that that is false from the people who have reviewed the cia's records. senator's feinstein, levin and mccain are amongst the senate intelligence community personnel who reviewed millions of pages of cia documents

the bank meltdown was upon us and john mccain was deciding just to suspend his campaign his decision came as a result of a meeting he had with his economic advisory team. a lot of these were big corporate donors and that romney was among them. all of those guys basically said, take whatever bush is offering on tar. the next day in fact romney won on "the today show" and set yeah i support t.a.r.p.. governor romney has modified many of his positions but he has not modified that. under those circumstances yes there could be a recipe for more regulation. >> what impact if any do you think the changes in california in their method for electing congressional representatives will have and -- >> are you talking about the redistricting? >> democrat versus democrat and republican versus republican? >> if i understand you right, there was a kind of bipartisan commission that redesigned the redistricting. i actually did a story for the "atlantic monthly" on redistricting and it mentions this thing. the belief by many politicians is that there is no such thing as a bipartisan or nonpartisan board and

. senator john mccain on twitter calling the general one of the great american heroes. we thank him for his service. stormin norman, as he was called, was a big man who left a big legacy. with us this morning is another general, general james spider marks joining us from virginia via skype. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> you know, stormin norman is what i remember about general norman schwarzkopf. a name he earned. a "time" magazine correspondent once called him a man with a john wayne swagger and a growl like a grizzly. is that how you remember him? this truly was a 20th century american military hero general schwarzkopf was a bigger than life man. his nickname personified that. it was a label he would protest openly. he was a humble man. what he-when you think about what he was asked to do, you keep it in context. the army had gone through this incredible turmoil post vietnam. i was a young lieutenant during that period. our army doctrine grew, it emerged. it was validated by general schwarzkopf in the deserts of kuwait when he ousted saddam's military. he was the significant ma

's credibility. does anyone else remember others? there was this notion -- they released this story -- that john mccain was having a relationship with a woman. they had heard in a very sexually provocative dress on the on-line edition, and a dress her up for the next one. this woman was a kind of lobbyist, but there was nothing in there that never proved that mccain was compromised. if mccain had a relationship with this woman, it was between him and his wife, and there was nothing -- he had not touched on anything that was politically important. they sort of backed away from that. it just lowered the temperature, again, of what we might call their bodily communication wait -- weight. there are other cases, the duke across scandal was another embarrassment. -- lacrosse scandal was another embarrassment. they did not cover themselves in glory, but the woman who claimed to be rich was not raped. it goes on like this. they also had a story about why caroline kennedy did not get the nomination, and that is when they also mentioned that she did not pay her taxes or something, but nobody put any recor

for obama? guest: they thought at the highest level that there were during to win. john that's different from mccain. guest: they believed their own internal polling which showed a different type of the electorate than what actually showed up. ronny thought he was going to win. even on election night, they were still picking about the fight. when the election was first called by nbc for president obama, the romney campaign began the process and they had been literally making the phone calls out to start the process of moving down to the podium to concede the presidency. they stopped because they had hoped that ohio was still too close to call. for over an hour, we report that history was on hold and they hit the pause button. it was not until well up to midnight that he finally did concede. he did not what the networks to have the last word. he wanted to make sure the votes were counted. we had this remarkable scene where the romney campaign it's a sweep in the west talking to senator portman on speaker phone and they're talking about the possibility of calling ryan down to the podium an
